We have just began...
It was standing room only with almost 150 guests packed into the restored new premises of Liberty League.
By private invitation only, the occasion was graced by friends and supporters from all walks of life which included schools, the media, social service and family-life organisations.
It was an event worthy of celebration as the formation of Liberty League has been a long and arduous journey for its founder Leslie Lung. He reminisced, “I can’t put an exact date to when Liberty League started as it evolved in stages over time. But things started to take shape after Project FOC in 1999.”
FOC or Freedom of Choice was Leslie’s first published book launched in 1999, a project that was
ground-breaking in many ways. For one, it broke the silence surrounding taboo subjects as the book chronicled 20 stories of people in Singapore who dealt with sexual bondage in their lives.
The book also raised $70,000 in support of Fei Yue Family Service Centre, Care Corner Mandarin Counselling Centre and the Young Women Muslim Association Single Parent Family Service.
What began as a book project soon opened new doors for its author. “The community’s response was overwhelming with requests for consultations, interviews and talks from all levels—schools, churches, faith-based institutions and other secular social groups. It was then that this outreach to the community began to take shape in the form of Liberty League as more and more people responded, volunteered and gave of their time, talent and fi nancial resources to the cause.
But the work of Liberty League is a magnet for controversy. “People have all kinds of notions about who we are and what we do. I repeat: we are neither a political nor religious organisation. We aspire to be all-inclusive and embrace people whatever their social, economic, spiritual and sexual backgrounds. What binds us together is a desire to deal with root issues and stop unwanted addictions, behaviours and
attractions, sexual or otherwise.”
In the end, Liberty League pursues to live up to its namesake. Ultimately, it is about choosing to be free
from one’s burdens—whatever their form —and the liberty to make that choice.
Returned --- with thanks!
Liberty League was awarded the New Initiative Grant by the National Volunteer & Philanthropy Board. Liberty League has not drawn on the grant as well-wishers have come for ward to support our work in cash and in kind. In view of this support and other considerations, we have declined the Grant and returned the funds on 16 Feb 06.
